Whitwell

Whitwell is located four miles east of Oakham and is named after the spring which flows from beneath the church, which is called 'the white spring', or 'the white well'.

During the building of Rutland Water, a Roman farmstead was discovered complete with an iron-smelting hearth and furnace. This is now buried under one of the Rutland Water car parks.
Whitwell is also the home of Whitwell Hall, which is a much altered 17th century building with some Perp tracery built into the wall by the main front.
